Our mission?

Our mission is to get more kids on bikes. We focus on mountain biking because it is safe and fun. It gives kids an opportunity to get outside, get exercise, explore, learn about the natural world that is around us. We want all kids to be able to experience this sport, regardless of income, and as much as we are able to we try to make that happen. We want to give kids who don't do a sport a chance to try an activity that might be a good fit for them. We think screens are OK, but we like offering a fun alternative to looking at a phone. :) We want to teach all kids the basic physical skill of riding a bike for safety, fun and confidence. We want to help teach life lessons through coaching kids to ride and race mountain bikes, building strong minds, bodies and character in the process. We hope to produce lifetime riders.

Who is Oakland Composite?

The Oakland Composite team is an official member of the NorCal High School Cycling League, which is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). We compete in the NorCal High School Cycling League's mountain bike Spring season, and begin training in December.

What is a composite team?

Your local composite team is where all athletes join if their school does not have an organized school team.

Who can ride with OAKLAND COMPOSITE?

Oakland Composite does not have try-outs or “cut” kids from the team. The purpose is to grow the sport and give kids a fun, healthy, outdoor activity where they can grow and engage with their peers. We welcome all ability levels, including kids who’ve never ridden mountain bikes before!

Any high-schooler can join a team! However, if your high school already has a team (ex: Berkeley, Piedmont, Oakland Tech, Skyline, Hayward or you live in Contra Costa County) you will ride with your school or local team. Check out our teams page here. If you are still not sure whether your school has a team, we can help you find out and put you in touch with them if they do. Please start by filling out our interest form.

A very important NICA rule is that teams are based on where a kid goes to school, not where they live (unless they are homeschooled). All the east bay team have amazing teams with great coaches!

There are cases where kids live in Oakland, go to school outside of Oakland, and yet are logistically unable to train with the composite team that they should be assigned to. For any of these situations, families must initiate the process and petition the league to become independent or join a team other than the one stipulated by the rules - start by filling out this form (http://www.nationalmtb.org/wp-content/uploads/petition.pdf) then email it to the NorCal league director (vanessa@norcalmtb.org). Familes must accept the decision of the Rules Committee… Oakland Composite coaches do not decide!

Who are the other school Teams in East Bay?

Oakland Tech, Skyline, Bishop O’Dowd, Alameda, Piedmont all have teams. Check our Teams page for contact information for the above teams.

All above teams race in the same NorCal League racing series.

What about middle schoolers?
